free speech…TODAY…in the blogosphere
I have come across a variety of blogs tonight. This is not something that is abnormal, though the blogs and sites I’ve found are a bit interesting to me! You might notice that I added the Human Rights Watch logo to my sidebar. Blogging for human rights makes so much sense to me…blogging for the justice for ALL, right? Well, that is not how the internet has always been used, but it seems as though that the internet, playing an important and decisive role in the past presidential election, is a [loud] medium that can [virtually] advocate for the human rights and justice for ALL.
I’ve found a manifesto…and I’ve posted it below. Its from Global Voices…read on…
- We believe in free speech: in protecting the right to speak — and the right to listen. We believe in universal access to the tools of speech.
- To that end, we seek to enable everyone who wants to speak to have the means to speak — and everyone who wants to hear that speech, the means to listen to it.
- Thanks to new tools, speech need no longer be controlled by those who own the means of publishing and distribution, or by governments that would restrict thought and communication. Now, anyone can wield the power of the press. Everyone can tell their stories to the world.
- We seek to build bridges across the gulfs that divide people, so as to understand each other more fully. We seek to work together more effectively, and act more powerfully.
- We believe in the power of direct connection. The bond between individuals from different worlds is personal, political and powerful. We believe conversation across boundaries is essential to a future that is free, fair, prosperous and sustainable – for all citizens of this planet.
- While we continue to work and speak as individuals, we also seek to identify and promote our shared interests and goals. We pledge to respect, assist, teach, learn from, and listen to one other.

why i write…er, blog…
Why really do I write in the blogging atmosphere? There are a variety of answers, of course. Ctontext matters, right? At least that is what I was taught in Hebrew class.Â
Now, I began this post after receiving an email from Lisa Tonna who shared with me her recent diagnosis of Lung Cancer. Reading her blog begged the question for me of “why do I write?” In particular, why do I maintain a blog? Blogging today seems to be THE primarily vehicle of consolidating a variety of sources of information–from politics and religion to world-views, economics, and one’s own personal affairs/views/lives!
For me, there have been several questions regarding why I blog–why the stream-of-consciousness writing partnered or coupled with my attempt to blog in a critical vein? Why put stuff so public or make public my thoughts and wishes and criticisms? WHY? WHY? WHY? Well…let me make an attempt to answer.
The internet, in my opinion, becomes a resourceful tool for me to situate my thoughts and feelings integrating information and being [subsequently] socialized into a world of information. Information no longer is privatized when the internet becomes the medium by which information is dissiminated and “fixed.” While information is never FIXED as in stasis, information does become…and is becoming…accessible. So, I write so that knowledge and wisdom can be free [liberated], though I attempt to organize my writings in a coherent and accessible way. While there tends to be a mode of writing that incorporates [privileges?] personal narrative, I seek to integrate critical evaluation and analysis with personal narrative. Additionally, I write to find my own voice in the midst of a very loud, noisy, male dominated world.
And so, this nomad continues to spiral…in her writing!
