If I were living in Toronto, Cheri would be my MPP. And, since I blog for all of human rights and liberation, I am posting the latest from the High Park MPP. Dr. DiNovo continues to work on behalf of those who have no voice to advocate for themselves! Thanks, Cheri! See you soon!!

Celebrating International Women’s Day!
On March 8th, over 350 women from around the world stood in solidarity in our community to celebrate International Women’s Day at Masaryk Cowan Community Centre. It was such an inspiration and honour to be part of this gathering with the incredible women of Parkdale-High Park.
Gender Identity and Human Rights
On Monday March 5th, I was proudly joined by leaders from the Lesbian, Gay, Transsexual, and Bisexual community in a press conference announcing my resolution to amend the Ontario Human Rights Code to include ‘gender identity’ as an enumerated ground. People who are transexed suffer daily abuses and discrimination during a journey towards their true gender identity. Through this amendment, the Ontario Human Rights Code would go a long way towards understanding this vulnerable community, and their need for human rights. Specific protection will clearly indicate to society that discrimination and harassment of transsexual and transgender people is wrong.
In the News
“Milan has a minister of fashion, Quebec spends tax dollars to support designers, and Japan pushes its fashions around the world. But here in Ontario – the fourth-largest design centre in North America – the government doesn’t even count fashion design as a cultural industry.
“‘That points out how far behind we are,’ MPP Cheri DiNovo said yesterday. ‘In New York and other centres in the world, what fashion designers do is considered beautiful, it’s considered cultural, it’s considered an art form.’
“The NDP politician wants Ontario to add fashion design to its list of recognized cultural industries, so up-and-coming designers can qualify for government grants and tax credits like their film-producing and book-writing cousins.”
