compulsory national service?

Tuesday, 12 September 2006 Leave a comment Go to comments

i’m listening to a Q & A w/ senartor barak obama who mentioned how he thought that a mandatory national service [military or otherwise] would be helpful for the upcoming generations to be active in their own government and help organize communities! having a requirement to fulfill a national service obligation would help to reduce college debt. as a person who seeks the way of non-violence and pacifism, i would find it very, very difficult to “vow” years of my life to “my” country, especially in a military position. i don’t know that i could do this.

i was just offered a job working w/ domestic violence and sexual assault populations that is service to communities and for the greater good. now, if there was an idea to create a program where college graduates give back to their communities having in mind the tremendous debt that students now owe, then perhaps that would be a legitimate and worthwhile idea! in fact, seeking to help organize communities and build up communities is something that only a community can do.

and so, what about compulsory national service?
