Halloween and the Reformation

Tuesday, 31 October 2006 Leave a comment Go to comments

Today marks the end of the month for many, but for so many others, today is a remembrance of the efforts to reform the church and still others it is an evening to celebrate Halloween rituals. These might seem in opposition, but I wonder if there is a correlation? The strands that are quite possibly connected are the darkness and mysteries that both Halloween and Protestant Reformation bring us. What darkness and what mysteries you ask?!

Well, I found a website  my underground on wordpress.com that presented a YouTube video that I think offers a nice critique of the world around us. No, Halloween isn’t addressed explicitly. In fact, Halloween might very well be the innocent of the two at this point. But, the correlation is the pain that emerges on this eve for so many. It is the Day of the Day, Halloween and Reformation. There is pain and hope for those who wait at the grave for their loved ones, mystery for those who seek to engage an earth-centered spirituality, and faith and frustration for those who look at the church and the world around them wondering how far have we really come? Perhaps November will yield a different emotion and some hope for a future that is coming toward us?
